Title: The Era of Megalodon
Genre: Oceanic Creatures
Resolution: 600 x 648
Program(s): Photoshop CS2 and Maya 7.0

The Megalodon Shark was possibly the largest predator to ever live. With an estimated size from 50 - 75 feet (some say even 100 feet, but these ideas are considered out dated) and weight anywhere from 30 - 40 tons, the Megalodon Shark would have been preying upon the largest of Blue Whales, Marlin and Orca. The Megalodon Shark was so large that it was capable of impacting its jaws upon a target with over 50,000 tons of pressure and able to swallow a rhino whole.

I have been working on this image for a while. Since I finally finished my 3D concept tank I figured I would go spend the last few hours it took to finish this piece. About 95% of this piece was done in photoshop and then the other 5% was done through 3D in Maya 7.0. The idea came to me when I saw a matte painting of a wave similar to mine about 8 months ago. I enjoyed the color scheme of the matte painting so I decided to use it in my piece. Probably about 50+ reference images were used to paint the waves, fish, marlin and the Megalodon. I think it came out pretty nice.

Possibly, from my research of Liopleurodon the size is debated much like Megalodon. Early size estimates of Liopleurodon were said to be 18 - 25 Meters in length but more recent recreations and estimates based on a skull recently found (measuring ~1.6 Meters long) state that Liopleurodon was slightly larger then 10 meters and probabily not exceding 12 - 15 meters since the head is believed to scale to 1/7 of the body. No doubt the animal was large like Megalodon but since neither of these predators can be seen today we won't really know which is larger. If the new calculations based on fossiles for both Megalodon and Liopleurodon are correct, then Megalodon was larger either way. Then again, I did state Megalodon was possibly the largest predator and not a fact that it is the largest. Just some freindly nerd talk :)

If you ask me, the fact that paleozoology is always changing is its greatest vice as well as its greatest virtue. :)

Indeed, current events may become past events, but always remember that there will, now and always, be future events in the future.
